ALBUM NOTES:

INTO THE AIR is the first studio recording since 2008’s MUTOPIA and proves to be, once again, a dramatic mutation for Jeff Coffin and his All Star Band, the Mutet. Coffin is his usual passionate and searching self, nearly playing the keys right off the saxophone while, at the same time, providing musical leadership to this incredible lineup of players.

“This is a uniquely collaborative recording,” says Coffin, “Six of the 10 tunes are co-writes. This is what the Mu’tet should be about…everyone contributing on a deep musical and compositional level. I think this is the best and most unique Mu’tet recording to date.”

INTO THE AIR combines Coffin’s trademarks of strong melodies with solos and ensemble play that are mind bending and swirl like a dust storm through the desert. This music ranges from sweet to salty to even a touch bitter and most places in-between. These musicians have a deep understanding of the past but play with a decidedly forward reach into the future! Special guest, Lionel Loueke (guitarist with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter) is ubiquitous on Lucky 13 and Loueke and provides some very tasty icing on an already delicious cake.

INTO THE AIR is a remarkable recording made by remarkable musicians.

...Some slinky jazz nasty that you would be hard pressed to find done better anywhere…If you are tired of the mundane, the commercial, the annoying predictability…then “Into The Air” is for you…Easily on my year end best of list!

Any band that jams like this has earned an exclamation point in the title of its live album…equal parts Galactic and Dirty Dozen Brass Band…(Coffin) enters like a spinning top, corkscrewing his phrases into a tightly wound circle that turns into a cyclone.
— Jazz Times
These players are peaking around corners and lifting up rocks to see what they find, and they’re stretching out wide to push boundaries…twisting the mind like a metaphysical puzzle.
